Description
The Marquis of Downshire Monument is a free-standing bronze statue erected around 1875 on the west side of Main Street in Hillsborough, set on a raised granite platform opposite the gate screen of St. Malachy's Church at the entrance to a children's playground.
The monument depicts Arthur Will Blundell Sandys Trumbull Windsor Hill, the Fourth Marquis of Downshire (1812–1868), popularly known as 'the Big Marquis'. The statue was modelled by Samuel Ferres Lynn, brother of the architect W. H. Lynn, and cast by Prince & Co. of Southwark. It is signed 'S.F. Lynn A.R.H.A.Sc. London 1873'. The figure is depicted in casual country dress with a walking stick and is rendered more than life-size to emphasise the Marquis's larger-than-life status within the village.
The bronze statue is supported on a slightly tapered granite pedestal and plinth block, which rest on a pair of sloping steps. The pedestal bears the inscription: 'In honour of ARTHUR, 4th Marquis of Downshire, born 6th August 1812 died 6th August 1868 Erected by his friends and tenants.'
The Fourth Marquis inherited his father's estates in 1845 and remained in Ireland during the Great Famine, commissioning relief works at considerable expense. He was also an advocate for the revival of the Irish language. The monument was erected on the site of the old brewery, which was demolished in 1873. It was listed in 1976 and is situated within Hillsborough's conservation area. The monument has group value with the many historic buildings in Hillsborough associated with the Hill family.
