Description
The statue of the 6th Marquess of Londonderry is located in front of the Police Station on North Terrace in Seaham. It commemorates Charles Stewart Vane-Tempest Stewart, the 6th Marquess of Londonderry, who lived from 1852 to 1915. The statue was created in 1915 by John Tweed. It features a standing bronze figure on a sandstone plinth and pedestal. The square plinth rests on a moulded stone base and supports a pedestal with sloping sides and a moulded cornice. An inscription on the pedestal reads: "This statue is placed here by his son and his daughter, amongst those whom he loved so well, and whose welfare and happiness were to him the principle objects of his life." The rear of the pedestal includes a relief carving of the Londonderry Arms, along with the Garter motto and the family motto: METUENDA COROLLA DRACONIS. The figure is slightly over life-size, holding a sword and scroll, and is draped in the cloak of the Order of the Garter.
