Description
The Londonderry Institute, built between 1853 and 1855 by Thomas Oliver, is a former literary and scientific institute located on Tempest Road in Seaham. Constructed from grey sandstone ashlar, it features low-pitched Welsh slate roofs and is designed in the Greek Revival style. The building has a T-plan layout with a projecting portico and a single storey that includes a 5-bay frontage with single-bay returns and a 3 x 2-bay wing at the rear.
The street facade showcases a 3-bay center with a tetrastyle Doric portico set on a 3-step stylobate, flanked by single-bay wings. The portico is topped with a pediment that has a corniced acroterion. The openings are adorned with battered eared architraves and raised sills. The central entrance features a pair of massive 4-panel doors, which have riveted iron framing, flanked by single windows. The single bays on either side are articulated by pilasters and have similar windows. The frieze includes triglyphs and blank metopes, while the single-bay returns, framed by corner pilasters, also have similar windows and projecting pedimented gables. The 3-bay rear wing is divided by pilasters and contains three windows along with a plain frieze. There are two corniced ashlar stacks at the junctions of the rear wing and returns.
The interior has undergone significant alterations and was noted to be in a state of disrepair at the time of the survey. The forecourt features six stone piers and a low chamfered wall, although only one pier on the left retains its pyramidal cap.
