Description

Chyknell War Memorial is a First World War memorial in the form of a triptych, along with a pair of gates, built before 1926. The memorial is situated at the entrance to the Chyknell Estate, facing east towards Digbeth Lane. It is placed within a small, square remembrance garden that is partially paved, surrounded by a hedge, and accessed through a pair of wooden gates that are approached by three sandstone steps.

The memorial itself is made of timber and features a shingle roof, resting on a square plinth of coursed, rough-hewn sandstone, which is set on a square base of bullnosed sandstone slabs. It consists of a gabled triptych on a capped plinth, elevated slightly on a raised base. The gabled roof is supported by timber corbels. Beneath the gable, there is a relief carving of two kneeling angels, adorned with gold halos, with a sun rising between them. They hold a shield inscribed with the gilded words, “AFTER THE DARKNESS LIGHT.” Below this, three hardwood panels are supported by carved brackets. The outer two panels fold slightly inwards and are inscribed with the dates “AUG 4th 1914” and “NOV 11th 1918.” The central panel displays a roll of honour that lists the surname, rank, initials, and regiment of the fallen. Below this is another panel with the inscription “MEN OF CLAVERLEY.” Additionally, four later metal plaques are attached to the back of the triptych, listing the names of local men who served, along with the inscription “THESE MEN SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR.”

The pair of slatted timber gates leading to the remembrance garden features cambered top rails with the inscription “THE PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE.”
