Description

Worle War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1922, with additional inscriptions added after the Second World War and in 1993. The gates were replaced in 1959.

The memorial is constructed from roughly-dressed limestone rubble with freestone dressings, topped with a gabled roof of plain tiles. The clock tower, which rises to about 9 meters, is clad with oak shingles. The building has a rectangular plan and resembles a small one-storey lychgate. It features a stone plinth and pointed-arched entrances, with mid-20th century decorative wrought-iron gates at both the front and rear. Each side of the archway has a single light with a metal screen.

Above the archway on the south gable is an inset stone tablet with the inscription in painted black lettering: "TO THOSE OF THIS / PARISH WHO DIED / & FOUGHT IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918." The clock tower has a clock face and a small louvered opening on the front (south) side, topped with a pyramidal roof and a finial. Inside the building are small corner seats.

On the west wall, there is a marble plaque inscribed: "IN MEMORY OF / THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / (NAMES) / 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'." Attached to the east wall is another marble plaque that reads: "IN MEMORY OF / THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945. / H.M. FORCES / (NAMES) / CIVILIANS / (NAMES) / 'SPLENDID YOU PASSED INTO THE LIGHT / THAT NEVERMORE SHALL FADE'." A third marble plaque states: "OTHER CONFLICTS / (NAME)."

Flanking the front of the war memorial are dwarf walls made of stone rubble with freestone coping.
