Description
The Church of Saint Martin, located on Church Road in Worle, is a Grade II* listed building with Norman origins, though it is primarily in the Perpendicular style. The structure is built of rubble with freestone dressings and features a tiled roof. It consists of a four-bay nave and a north aisle, along with a west tower and a chancel that includes a 19th-century north chapel and a south porch.
The tower has three stages and is supported by angle buttresses. Its west doorway is adorned with fine carvings, including fleurons and head stops to the hood mould. The tower also features a pierced parapet with quatre foils arranged in lozenges and a higher stair turret on the southeast side. The small, ribbed spire sits atop the tower. The north aisle has a parapet matching that of the spire, and there is a rood stair tower topped with a spirelet on an arcaded drum. Additionally, there is a 19th-century two-bay extension of the north aisle in the north chapel.
Inside, the church has a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel, with a lofty chancel arch. Notable interior features include a Norman octagonal font, a finely carved Perpendicular pulpit, and south stalls with misericords, two of which bear the initials of Richard Sprynge, who was Prior of Woodspring and Vicar of Worle from 1499 to 1516. In the graveyard, approximately five yards from the south door, there is an 18-inch high stump dated 1664.
