Description

Newtons is a farmhouse, now a house, with origins dating back to the 17th century, marked by the date "S/IF/171O" on a decorative hopper head on the left side. The building features rubble construction, squared and coursed on the south front, with a slate roof and coped raised verges. It has two storeys, an attic, and part of a basement, with six windows. The windows are timber mullion and transom leaded casements, complete with catches and stays. There is a three-panel door set in a moulded frame beneath a pedimented porch supported by thin columns. A plain band runs between the floors, and a prominent timber gutter is held up by cast iron brackets. The house has three pedimented dormers with louvres and ball finials, as well as gable stacks with cornices.

An east wing, added in the 19th century, is set back and reveals part of the east gable, which features a gable entry door under a dripmould and a two-light ovolo moulded mullion casement above. At the rear, there are three wings of two storeys, with cross windows similar to the front and later casements, as well as a single-storey entrance block beyond. The basement of the west wing includes a three-light chamfered mullion stone window.

Inside, the east ground floor room retains 17th-century features, including a ceiling that is two feet lower than in other areas, with very deep chamfered beams that have ridge stops, and an inglenook fireplace with a bread oven, a chamfered timber lintel, and a counterbalanced spit mechanism. The basement room in the west wing has a plank door in an ovolo moulded frame. A fine open well staircase features plain square capped newels, a heavy handrail, and turned balusters. At the foot of the staircase, there are three dog gates with curved heads, plain balusters, and panels below, leading to the basement, rear entry, and main stair. The plaster ceiling at the head of the staircase has a central oval wreath and later quadrant decoration. The rear west ground floor room is panelled, and the adjoining front room is partly panelled; both rooms feature paintings above the doors in the front room and over the door and corner fireplace in the rear room.
