Bridge over railway, Main Street, Crumlin, Co Antrim

This is a single-arch masonry bridge built between 1840 and 1859, constructed from rubble basalt with a segmental brick archway. The bridge carries the main street of Crumlin over a railway line. It exhibits early Victorian bridge engineering and retains an unspoiled appearance.

The bridge has battered faces to its abutments, with pier-like projections at the extremities and near the springing point of the arch. The brick archway is set back from the abutment piers and is constructed from six courses of firebrick, with a sandstone keystone. A projecting sandstone string course is present at carriageway level, and sandstone copings define the parapets. The brickwork is vaulted and skewed, and the carriageway has a hump-backed profile. The parapet copings are roughly faced with chiselled edges, while the copings over the abutment piers have angled caps with flat tops.

The bridge is located within the built-up area of the village, at the east end of the main street, and is surrounded by grassy banks. It was built to carry the main street over the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway, a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. Although the branch line itself was constructed between 1864 and 1871, the bridge appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1858. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
