Description
The ice house, constructed between 1800 and 1819, is located within the Glendaragh estate, near Crosshill in Crumlin, County Antrim. It was built as a domestic ice house and appears on an Ordnance Survey map dated 1832-3. The structure is made of handmade brickwork, featuring a hemispherical, brick-vaulted dome on a circular plan. The entrance, which faces north, is marked by a rectangular open doorway. The exterior of the vault is covered in cement render, though much of this render has been lost. The ice house stands in the south-east corner of a field, north of Glendaragh house, in a rural location with an open aspect to the north, near the main road. While it retains the typical structural form of an ice house and is of local interest related to the estate's development, it has lost some of its original features. It possesses industrial archaeological interest.
