Dundesert Bridge, Nutts Corner Road, Crumlin, Co Antrim

Dundesert Bridge is an early 19th-century masonry bridge located on the Nutts Corner Road, Crumlin, County Antrim, carrying the main road over the Dundesert River. It is a typical example of a robustly constructed bridge in a relatively unspoiled rural setting. The bridge comprises three segmental arches built with random rubble basalt, featuring roughly shaped voussoirs. Each face has roughly triangular cutwaters, with recessed arch and spandrel panels. The parapets have been raised and finished with horizontal, feather-edged concrete copings. Some damage is visible to the ends of the parapets at the western extremity, where stonework has been dislodged. At the east end, the parapets continue as field walls on both the north and south faces, with a concrete skirting on the north face. The carriageway is flat.

The precise date of construction is unknown, but the bridge appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1832-3, where it is named. Lendrick’s map of 1780 shows a road at this location, suggesting a bridge may have existed then. The bridge was previously listed and then delisted on 8th October 1997. The bridge is situated in a very rural area, surrounded by trees and bushes. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
