Description
Ardina Bridge is a twin-arched road bridge of likely late 18th or early 19th century date, situated on the Ballywoolen Road, Castlerock, Coleraine, County Londonderry. The bridge carries a minor road across the Articlave River and is constructed from random rubble basalt throughout. The bridge is asymmetrical, and its parapets have been replaced and now feature concrete copings.
The two arches are semicircular, with roughly dressed basalt voussoirs. The abutments extend outwards as tapered buttresses, mirroring the angled cutwaters which rise to arch spring level at each end of the central pier. The spandrels beneath the arches are of roughly dressed basalt blocks laid in courses, contrasting with the random rubblework. The carriageway has a slight curve. The approach walls on the west side of the river also have tapered buttresses. The bases of the abutments and pier have been faced with concrete, and the riverbed is paved with original stone slabs to reduce scouring.
An uncaptioned bridge is depicted at this location on an Ordnance Survey map of 1830. The 1835 Ordnance Survey Memoir for Dunboe Parish describes the bridge as having two arches, each 18 feet in span, and notes that the 280-foot-long wall is 3 feet high and 18 inches thick, with a carriageway 17 feet 6 inches wide. The memoir also mentions that 10 feet of the wall was in disrepair. The bridge was explicitly named Ardina Bridge on Ordnance Survey maps from 1853. It was likely built by the Londonderry Grand Jury, possibly during the second half of the 18th century or the first quarter of the 19th century. The bridge is located in open countryside, surrounded by fields. It has some industrial archaeological interest.
