Description
A house and outbuildings form a significant grouping at the junction of Broad and Gortgarn Roads in Limavady. The house itself is a well-proportioned example of vernacular architecture, notably influenced by Georgian styles with white harling, complemented by Victorian bargeboards and chimneys. It’s considered a Victorian development of a traditional building type and represents a high-quality country residence.
The two-storey house is harled and whitewashed, with a width of three bays. The eaves rise just above a height of one-and-a-half storeys. A central doorway is flanked by two windows on each side. Four-pane sash windows are found on the south-west elevation, while two-pane casements are present on the north-east. Matching four-pane sashes are above the ground-floor windows. An open lattice-work porch with a pitched roof and decorative bargeboard shelters the front door. Bangor blue slates cover the roof, which overhangs the gable and features decorative bargeboards, with brick chimneys rising above the gables. A single-storey, lean-to addition abuts the north-east gable, its window aligning with the other ground-floor openings. The north-east gable incorporates two small, high-level single-pane windows, with no openings in the lean-to gable. The rear elevation, facing south-east, has a less formal window arrangement. A central porch with a metal roof features a six-pane metal window, a door to the north-east, and a small single-pane window to the south-west. A two-pane casement lights the kitchen, located on the south-west of the facade, with a single-pane casement above, closer to the porch. Two similar-sized windows are positioned at both ground and first floor levels on the other side of the porch. The south-west gable displays two small, high-level windows flanked by two timber verticals resembling shutters, and two ground-floor windows, the front one being a four-pane sash. The building is set back approximately six metres from Broad Road. An L-shaped range of barns extends to the north-east, alongside a small hedge and garden in front of the house.
The house does not appear on the 1830 Ordnance Survey Map, but it is shown on the 1848 survey with a single small outbuilding to the north-east. The present arrangement is documented on the 1907 map. The current owner purchased the house in 1979 from Henry McClary, who had used it as a farm and owned land to the rear. Previously, the building served as a shop with a petrol pump; the present kitchen area was utilized for this purpose, and the old shop sign is stored within one of the barns.
