Description

This is a two-storey, four-bay house built between 1820 and 1839, facing north onto Main Street in Dungiven. The building is in a vernacular Georgian style with smooth rendered walls and a natural slate roof, featuring two chimney stacks—one on each gable.

The main north-facing elevation has four-pane sliding sash windows on the ground floor and two-pane casement windows above, all aligned. A well-detailed elliptical fanlight is recessed within a plain surround, topped by an entablature, above a wide entrance door with pilasters and scroll moulding. Cast iron rainwater goods are present. The west elevation is blank, with an alleyway running alongside. The rear, south-facing elevation is largely obscured by a two-storey, low-pitch lean-to shed, although windows are visible in the westernmost bay—a first-floor casement and ground-floor French windows. A remnant of an orchard exists within the overgrown rear garden, and there are no windows on the east gable. The shed extends around half of the rear elevation. The house is set back from the street, with rear access at the west end.

The building appears on the 1832 Ordnance Survey map, though its original function is unclear. It was previously occupied as a rectory until 1970, before a new rectory was built elsewhere in the town. Renovations revealed timbers, suggesting the original building was single-storey. This aligns with historical accounts indicating that the Skinners improved several single-storey houses in the 1870s, potentially explaining the differing window construction between the ground and first floors. Currently, the building is in use as a shop.
