Description

This is a two-storey, four-bay building on Main Street in Dungiven, constructed between 1980 and 1999. It replicates the front elevation of a former manor house, although it is shorter in length and now serves as offices. The building is harled and painted in a Georgian style, facing north onto Main Street. The entrance door is off-centre, aligned with the second bay, and the building line is set 1½ metres behind the footpath, featuring a low stone wall with a spear-headed balustrade. The recessed entrance door has a semicircular fanlight within a concave, smooth plaster architrave; the four-panelled door itself is modern and gives a narrow appearance, and the radial glazing of the fanlight is crudely executed. Concrete cills are present, and the modern sliding sash windows have twelve panes on the first floor, intended to resemble larger ground floor windows. There are no windows on the gables. The western gable abuts a flat-roofed, single-storey shop. Chimneys with two pots are situated on the apex of the gables. A lean-to bin store is located at the rear, with access to flats via glass doors on either side. A segmental window is positioned at first floor level in the centre of the façade. The rear gardens have been built over with apartments for Fold Housing Association, although parts of the original boundary wall remain.

The replacement building is a shortened replica of the former manor house, which may have been the residence of Robert Leslie Ogilby, a magistrate and the manor's agent. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs indicate he resided in the town centre. The 1858 Griffiths Valuation recorded the house at £30, with R.L. Ogilby as the occupant. Subsequent occupants included P McDaid, Chemist, and Dr Martin. Prior to demolition by Fold Housing Association, the original property included a large garden and orchard to the rear. A 1970 survey described the original building as having a two-storey design with a roughcast finish to the walls and a slated roof, with double-hung windows in plain reveals. The entrance was recessed within a coved and moulded surround, the panelled door was topped with a three-centre arched fanlight with radial glazing, and the façade was protected by cast iron railings. In 1986, following a bomb explosion and fire, the building was demolished, and the replica was completed in 1987. The owner is Fold Housing Association, based in Holywood, Co Down.
