Description

This is a two-and-a-half-storey terrace house, likely constructed between 1860 and 1879, situated on Lower Main Street in Dungiven, County Londonderry. It forms a visually appealing group with a terrace of four dwellings at the western entrance to the town.

The building is smoothly rendered and faces north. The main facade is divided into two sections. To the east is a modern shop front, formerly a video store. To the west is a renovated entrance with a fanlight, flanked by four-pane sliding sash windows with horns, each framed by a matching architrave. The fanlit door has been restored, featuring two side lights and a semicircular fanlight constructed of circular astragals, set within a plaster architrave that appears to be a later addition. Four steps lead up to the door, accompanied by a simple wrought iron handrail. Symmetrically placed sash windows are located on either side of the entrance. Painted quoin stones mark the corners of the building.

The roof is slate, with cast iron rainwater goods. A painted chimney appears at the apex of the gable facing the side street, and includes a small, high-level window. An access hatch is located at a high level within the undercroft of the adjacent entry. A shallow-pitched felt roof extends from just behind the ridge. There is an access to the rear of the site via a side street.

Historically, the building has been used as a shop and residential dwelling. It originally operated as a grocery and general store, and has consistently housed a shop according to present owners. The building appears on the 1830 Ordnance Survey Map, and was previously owned by John Young, with William Deane listed as an occupant in Griffith’s Valuation of 1858. The building's value was recorded at £13-5-0. The architecture is noted for its style, proportion, ornamentation, and group value, contributing to local historical interest.
