Description

This is a simple, two-storey, three-bay terraced house built in the Georgian style, located on Lower Main Street in Dungiven. It forms part of a terrace and contributes to the pleasant approach to the western end of the town. The house is the central property of a group of three. The front facade is painted smooth render with a natural slate roof and cast iron rainwater goods. Brick chimneys are located on the ridge, one at each end of the building. There are sixteen-pane sash windows, with those on the ground floor taller than those on the first floor. They have stone cills and simple sand cement architraves. A three-pane rectangular fanlight is above the central entrance door, with smaller two-pane lights to either side. The doors and windows appear to be relatively recent replacements. A flight of five steps, rising from the eastern side, leads to the front door, and is protected by a simple steel balustrade, both of which are modern replacements. A large, two-storey extension, with a gable chimney, projects from the rear, covering the full width of the building. A steel fire escape stair leads to a first-floor flat.

Historical records indicate the building was likely rebuilt or renovated following changes in leasehold arrangements and reverting to the Skinner’s Company. Town improvements occurred after this date, and the Company contributed towards the construction of the Limavady Dungiven railway. The Skinner’s Company began disposing of their properties toward the end of the 19th century. The building served as a Police Barracks, recorded in Griffiths Valuation of 1858, at which time William Ross was the lessor. Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 (County Londonderry, sheet 24) provide further context. Locally, this building exhibits architectural merit through its style, proportions, and ornamentation, and it holds group value as part of the terrace.
