The Lodge, Largantea, Limavady, Co Londonderry

The Lodge at Largantea was an estate house built around 1860 and belonging to the Marquis of Waterford. Originally a one-and-a-half-story basalt house, it featured a slate roof with overhanging eaves and two chimneys placed on the ridge, one on either side of a central entrance hall. The recessed front door was flanked by two side lights and surmounted by a flat brick arch. Two twelve-pane sash windows were on either side of the entrance, and a small window was positioned under the eaves. Matching windows were also located on the gables, directly above each of the ground-floor windows. The house was derelict when surveyed in 1970 and has since been demolished. A photograph of the house, dating from the early years of the 20th century, was found at 67 Windyhill Road; the photograph was taken by someone related to the people depicted in it. Now a carpark outside the gate of a Department of Agriculture-owned forest, the only remaining feature is a basalt stone wall along the site boundary, which is likely part of the original farm boundary wall.
