Description
The gate lodge, likely constructed between 1780 and 1799, is a single-story, ruinous building situated on Ballyquin Road near Dungiven, County Derry. It stands perpendicular to the road, approximately 5 meters back and concealed behind a hedge. The entrance is marked by harled rectangular pillars topped with stone caps. A modern agricultural gate now occupies the opening. The building is constructed of rubble stone with decaying harling, and a projecting brick course is visible at the head. A low, slate hipped roof is partially obscured by vegetation, and there is no guttering.
The south-facing façade features an entrance door and two window openings, positioned beside the remains of a former entrance path. The door opening is located at the southwest corner, closest to the road. The windows have concrete sills that do not project. One window retains remnants of a fixed casement window and a high-level opening light, while a small window is present on the western, road-facing elevation. The remaining elevations are blank.
The building is located within a corner of an agricultural field; no boundary fences or outbuildings are visible. The former access road is now little more than a track. The gate lodge is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1832 (Londonderry 24 and 25), with a revision from 1856, and is documented in Griffiths Valuation records from 1858. It is currently used as a farm building and is noted as derelict.
