Description

This is a terrace of three, two-and-a-half storey houses dating from the Edwardian period (roughly 1900 to 1919), located on Ann Street in Ballycastle. While the design is simple and the terrace is not considered to have particular historical significance, at least one house retains a relatively unaltered interior.

The houses are two bays wide and include basements. Number 75 features two four-panel doors with rectangular fanlights above, a shop window with a missing fascia, and two double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes of glass and moulded architraves. Above the first-floor window is a continuous ogee gutter on a stringcourse, used to direct water from short downpipes. The roof is natural slate and includes two gabled dormers, each with two double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes of glass, moulded architraves, and segmental heads. The dormers break the eaves line and have a corbelled course. Number 77 is similar, but with two double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes of glass and moulded architraves at ground floor level instead of the shop. Number 79 is similar to number 77, but its ground floor features a single, large window consisting of two lights with a moulded architrave around the frame. This house has a small hanging sign instead of a fascia. All three houses have basements.

The rear of the terrace includes back returns, one with a double-pitched roof and the other with a lean-to roof. Windows on the rear elevations are double-hung sliding sash windows with two panes of glass, and one dormer is present on the rear of number 75. The walls are smooth, rendered, and painted.

Although not shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1904, the terrace appears for the first time on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1935, which includes revisions from 1921 and 1931. The Edwardian date is supported by intact original cast iron fireplaces found within number 79. The terrace contrasts with the buildings at numbers 69 to 73 but maintains the established building line and adds visual interest. The terrace is located within the Town Parks townland and sits within a conservation area.
