Description
This is a corner building located in Ballycastle, consisting of a 2-bay, 3-storey section and a 2-storey adjunct. It is an interesting early 20th-century building that aligns architecturally with numbers 51 and 57 Ann Street (see HB05/14/014A), and the adjunct fronting onto the street leading to the former railway station contributes to a pleasing composition.
The Ann Street facade features a shop front with two large windows, each divided into six panes, with pilasters and a projecting name fascia topped with a cornice. The chamfered corner has an entrance door with a small framed name fascia above. The return front mirrors this design with two large shop windows, also divided into four panes, and similar pilasters and fascia. A stringcourse links the first-floor window sills and connects with that of numbers 51 and 57 (see HB05/14/014A). At the first floor, there are two double-hung sliding sash windows with four panes each facing Ann Street, one above the shop entrance on the corner, and one on the return front. Above each window is an oculus with a central mullion; one oculus over a window on the return façade has been built up. A half-round gutter sits above a plain corbel course. The roof is covered in natural slates and is hipped around the corner.
The adjunct, continuing the return front, is two bays wide and two storeys high, with a four-panelled entrance door topped with a rectangular fanlight and a double-hung sliding sash window with four panes. Due to the sloping ground, there are four steps leading up to the entrance door. Centred above the ground floor door and window are two double-hung sliding sash windows with four panes each. The walls are smooth, rendered and painted, with a plinth. Further details include half-round gutters, downpipes, natural slates to the roof, and a chimney stack on the gable of the adjunct. There are no openings on the gable. Number 59 turns the corner from Ann Street to the street leading to the former bus garage (formerly a railway station, see HB05/14/026), maintaining the building line. It is evident that number 59 was originally an integral part of numbers 51 and 57.
The building was first depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1904 and was likely erected around 1900. It was originally used as a shop and dwelling and retains that use. It stands within a conservation area and exhibits architectural interest due to its style, proportions, and ornamentation, as well as its group value and local historical interest.
