Description
This is a well-preserved, two-and-a-half storey house dating from the late 19th century, with a later shop front, located within a terrace in Ballycastle. The building retains several original features which contribute to its special architectural interest and group value.
The house is three bays wide, with a basement and a two-storey flat-roofed rear extension. The ground floor incorporates a shop front with a doorway featuring a fanlight and a shop window, both fitted with roller shutters. A panelled door provides access to the living accommodation, also with a plain, rectangular fanlight. A gateway is present to the side. Above the shop front is a plain fascia spanning the entire facade, with moulded stops at each end and thin framing at the top and bottom, displaying simple applied lettering. The first floor has three double-hung sash windows with two panes each, featuring moulded architraves, a deep plain frieze, and a corbel course below the gutter. The walls are smooth, rendered, and painted. A half-round metal gutter and simple round downpipe are present. Two gabled dormers with curved fretwork barges are set into the slate roof. Chimney stacks are located at each end of the roofline, which is slightly lower than the adjacent building at number 47. A recently constructed two-storey flat-roofed rear extension adjoins the side of the gateway. The passageway has a steep fall. The rear elevation originally had three windows at ground and first floor, which are double-hung sash windows with four panes each; the remaining windows are of a modern style. The walls on the rear elevation are roughcast rendered and currently unpainted. Two original double-hung iron rooflights with two panes each are situated on the slate roof.
The building was likely constructed in the 1880s. The former owner's name is still visible on the shop fascia, and they resided in the building until 12 years ago. The building was renovated and is located within a conservation area. The listing covers the shop front, house, and archway.
