Description
This is a two-storey stone building, likely dating from the late 19th century (1880-1899), situated behind 51-59 Ann Street, Ballycastle. The building's significance primarily lies in its relationship to the nearby listed buildings. While some sections have suffered partial dereliction and its original integrity has been compromised by a modern building extension, it retains certain characteristic features.
The north-west facade, which runs parallel to numbers 51 and 59 Ann Street and overlooks the space behind them, features two built-up square-headed gateways at ground floor, along with a series of small window openings edged with brick. A narrow built-up doorway is located at first floor. The walls are constructed of random rubble sandstone with good quoins. The north-east gable has a single four-panel door set above a short flight of steps; the stonework here is rough rubble and it is joined to No. 59 by a stone wall, separated by a gate. The south facade displays a random arrangement of small openings at both ground and first floor levels. A modern sorting office building has been constructed at a right angle to the south facade and is connected to it by a covered way roofed with a double-pitched slated roof. A door provides access from the covered way to both the store and the sorting office. A brick-trimmed segmental arch, partially exposed at the north-east end of the south facade, may have originally spanned a stream, although no evidence of this remains. The south-west gable has no openings. The roof over three-quarters of the store has been reroofed with natural slate, while the remainder retains its original covering. A rooflight is present, and there are no chimneys.
The building first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1904. While its original purpose is unknown, it was likely constructed as outbuildings for numbers 51 and 59 Ann Street. The stone built store lies behind Nos. 51/59 Ann Street and the space between them used as access to flats there. The building is located within a conservation area.
