Stone Circles, Rallagh Road, Aughlish, Feeny, Co Londonderry

The site consists of a group of stone circles and alignments dating to approximately 2000 BC, representing an excellent example of these features. Located on the southern slope of Caugh Hill in Aughlish, the grouping includes five circles or partial circles, two alignments, and a solitary standing stone. The alignments are arranged as straight lines of stones that run tangentially to two of the smaller circles, with a further alignment of smaller stones running parallel and closely alongside these. The most prominent feature is a complete circle of standing stones at the southern end of the group; most stones are relatively small, but two situated almost directly opposite each other have a height of approximately 1400mm. Numerous smaller stones are scattered within this circle, and a series of stones form an alignment to the east side. A little to the west stands the isolated standing stone. The stone circles and alignments are situated at the upper end of a sloping grazing field, accessed off the Rallagh Road. The site is considered to date to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age (approximately 2000 BC). Historical references include an Ordnance Survey map from 1830, Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland (1833-34), and statistical reports from 1821, alongside publications by the Banagher History Group and Mallory and McNeill concerning the archaeology of Ulster. The site's former and current use is as a standing stone, and it is considered a monument.
