Description

Aughlish House is a house dating probably from the mid-18th century, although significantly altered and enlarged in the second half of the 19th century. It is notable as the birthplace of Rev. Professor Thomas Witherow, a former Presbyterian minister of Maghera and, from 1866, Professor of Church History at Magee College, Londonderry.

The house is a five-bay, two-and-a-half-storey, gabled building with a slate roof and four rendered chimney stacks. The north-facing entrance elevation, which benefits from a panoramic view, features a modern six-panel hardwood door with a semicircular fanlight containing radial astragals. Original sliding sash windows have been replaced with hardwood two-pane windows with opening top lights. The walls are pebble-dashed with Carmean chips, with plaster rusticated quoins and a smooth rendered plinth. It has ogee aluminium pressed gutters and round downpipes, and an asbestos slate roof. Each gable has two small windows beneath projecting barge mouldings, finished to match the north side of the building. A projecting gabled porch is located at the second bay of the south side, which also incorporates single and double windows, with five windows at the first floor, spaced unevenly.

The house is situated at the end of a long, wide avenue bordered by good drystone walls and hedges, surrounded by various detached farm buildings. A house has occupied this site since at least the mid-18th century. The house likely took its present form around the time that Robert Witherow inherited the family farm in 1867. A renovation in the 1970s removed what little original character the building possessed.
