Description
Finglen Lodge is a pair of hunting lodges or cottages dating to the late 19th century, built between 1880 and 1899. They occupy a pleasant setting in the Finglen townland, although possess little architectural merit. The buildings form a long, single-storey arrangement, with an attached barn extending to the west. The lodges are seven bays long. Each lodge has a central, square-headed door flanked by an eight-pane metal window on either side. The barn features a single door. The walls are harled, the roof is covered with a mix of natural and asbestos slates, and the building has cast iron half-round guttering. There are four chimney stacks. A continuous lean-to extends to the rear of the lodges. All openings are currently boarded up.
The Finglen townland was owned by Stewart Bruce in the first half of the 19th century. The Stevenson family of Knockan leased the land for shooting purposes and constructed the lodges, which were not depicted on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1830 or the revised edition of 1856, but were shown on the 1905 revision. The lodges were subsequently occupied by tenants for a period. Historical records include Ordnance Survey maps from 1830 and revised editions of 1856 and 1905, alongside the Memoirs of Ireland for the parishes of County Londonderry (1833-34, 1858).
