Description

This is a part single-story, part two-story gabled dwelling of probable pre-1834 origin, situated on the northeast side of Lisbane Road, approximately 2.5 miles north of Killinchy. Originally a significantly longer structure, a large section of the southern portion was recently demolished, and the original thatched roof of the single-story section has been replaced with asbestos slates.

The building consists of two houses joined as a block. The front southwest facade of the two-story section (towards the northwest) features a timber-sheeted door to the right and a sash window with horizontal astragal glazing to the left. Directly above the door is a smaller, similarly styled window. The northwest gable is blank and has a dilapidated wooden shed attached. The rear of this section is inaccessible due to dense vegetation. The front facade of the single-story section has a timber-sheeted door to the right of center, with two windows to the left and another to the right of the door. The southeast gable is blank and, like the rear of the two-story section, has no visible openings. The entire facade of the building is finished in roughcast. Both sections are gabled, with asbestos slates covering the roofs, along with two rendered chimney stacks and PVC rainwater goods.

According to Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60, the site originally comprised a long building with a shorter block to the south. The houses were likely below rateable value and therefore not mentioned in the first valuation survey. However, a later valuation from around 1861 indicates that the block contained two dwellings: one unoccupied and the other occupied by a James Lowry, who remained in the Lowry family until recently. The two-story section likely began as a single-story structure. This building displays vernacular characteristics.
