Description
This is a storey-and-a-half, three-bay house built in the Georgian style, facing west at the lower edge of a group of farm buildings on the upper slopes of Gortnarney townland. The house is located to exploit a pleasant view and, while of a later date than might initially appear, represents the only surviving example of its type in an area where such farmhouses were once common.
The exterior is characterised by simple proportions and sand cement rendering on rubble basalt walls, which may have squared sandstone quoins. It features a central doorway originally topped with a segmental fanlight and Georgian pattern sidelights, now removed for renovation. Sash windows are present on either side of the doorway, though they are broken and awaiting replacement. The roof is covered with natural slate and formerly featured three chimneys, which have been dismantled. A small, overgrown front garden is marked by stone pillars along Lislane Road.
The north elevation, facing Lislane Road, contains two high-level, two-pane sash windows that illuminate the attic space, and the remains of a four-pane sash window positioned off-centre below. A new window opening has been created at the rear. An extension is currently being constructed on the rear (east) elevation, projecting 1200mm from the main house. This extension includes a door opening facing north and three window openings facing east, with one window situated in the south corner and extending onto the extension's south elevation. Two additional windows are located above. The south gable features two high-level, 12-pane sash windows in the attic, and a blocked-up doorway below.
The house first appears on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1905. According to the Griffiths Valuation of 1858, the land was owned by Mr William Ross and rented from the Marquis of Waterford. Six members of the Ross family resided in the surrounding townland, suggesting the house was likely built by them. The Loughery family currently owns the farm, with a son undertaking the renovation of the house, which had been vacant for several years.
