27 Drumfad Road, Drumfad, Millisle, Newtownards, Co Down, BT22 2JQ

27 Drumfad Road is an attractive one and a half storey gabled house situated on the north side of Drumfad Road, approximately two miles south of Millisle. The building is of probable eighteenth century origin, though it was substantially altered in the later nineteenth century; however, its interior layout still retains characteristics of its age.

The south-facing front facade features a right of centre gabled porch of recent construction, incorporating a panelled door, sidelights, and glazing to its east and west facades, with a glazed inner door within. To the left of the porch are two sash windows with vertical glazing bars; a similar window is positioned to the right. At upper level is a central gabled half dormer with a semicircular headed window opening, now fitted with a PVC frame.

The east gable has a window matching those on the ground floor front, positioned to the right; two similar but slightly smaller windows are placed at the upper level. The west gable has a comparable arrangement, with the ground floor window positioned to the left instead. A lean-to conservatory, now partly glazed at its rear, spans over the ground floor window and continues around the corner to the far right side of the rear elevation. The rear portion of the conservatory incorporates a partly glazed rear door. To the far left on the ground floor rear is a set of French doors, with two windows positioned between these doors and the conservatory. At upper level to the left of centre is a segmental arch headed window opening with a sash frame featuring vertical and horizontal glazing bars.

The facade is finished in rough cast render with smooth render to wall edges. Windows to the front and gables have plain render surrounds with simple moulded keystones. An eaves course runs along the wall line. The pitched roof is covered in Bangor blue slates with two centred rendered chimney stacks. Roof overhangs occur at the gables and half dormer, with plain barges. PVC rainwater goods are fitted throughout.

Historical records indicate that a house has stood on this site since at least 1797, when it appeared on the Dunbar estate map in the possession of William Adams. Buildings are also shown on Ordnance Survey maps dated 1833–34 and 1858–60. It is probable that the present house is substantially that which existed in 1797, though the roof has been raised at some point. Judging by the style of the gabled half dormer, roof overhang at the gables, and window frame style, this raising is likely to have been carried out in the latter decades of the nineteenth century. The porch and conservatory are recent additions dating to approximately the 1990s.
