Description

This is a two-storey gabled farmhouse, likely dating to the late Victorian period, situated off Ballyhaskin Road, approximately two miles east of Carrowdore. The house has undergone significant extension and modernisation in recent times.

The north-facing front elevation features a central doorway originally topped with a segmental arch, now enclosed by a panelled and glazed double PVC door within a plain rendered surround. Two PVC windows flank the doorway, with two similar windows above them on the first floor. A further window is visible on the first floor of the east gable. The west gable displays a first-floor window similar to those on the front, along with a larger, modern-style ground floor window, also with a PVC frame. The rear of the house is dominated by a substantial full-height gabled return to the left and a large, partly single-storey, partly two-storey flat-roofed extension to the right. The west-facing facade of the return has a first-floor window matching the front elevation, and a PVC conservatory is attached to the ground floor. A single-storey gabled outbuilding is attached to the rear (south) gable of the return. The flat-roofed extensions and the exposed east facade of the return all incorporate PVC windows and a PVC door of varying sizes. The facade is finished with rough cast rendering, featuring a chamfered plinth. The roofs of the main house and the return are pitched and covered in Bangor blue slates, topped with two rendered chimney stacks to the main house and one to the return. The main house’s roof has overhangs with decorative bargeboards, and the windows are PVC framed.

A building is depicted on Ordnance Survey maps dating from 1833/4 and 1858/60, but the presence of the rear return and decorative bargeboards suggests a substantial renovation or rebuilding occurred in the late Victorian or Edwardian era. Historical records including Valuation records, Ordnance Survey maps, and Griffith’s Valuation, held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), support these findings.
