Description
Woburn Cottage is a picturesque former school house, now converted to a dwelling, situated on the south side of Woburn Road approximately two miles south of Millisle. Built around 1860, the building was constructed by George Dunbar of nearby Woburn House, though historical records suggest a possible dating range from 1855 to the 1870s. A building marked as a school house appears on the revised Ordnance Survey map of 1858–60, and the school remained in operation until its closure in 1927, after which the building was converted to domestic use.
The structure is constructed of basalt rubble with sandstone dressings and is roofed with Bangor blue slates. The design exhibits elaborate picturesque style with considerable ornamentation throughout. The building presents as one and a half storeys with prominent gables at either end, each topped with elaborately carved barges and a carved head. The long north facade features two principal windows between the end gables, each with timber casement frames and sandstone "Gibbs surround" dressings with a carved cross motif in a circle on the lintel. One of these windows was converted to a doorway around the 1960s but has since been restored. Below each carved head on the gables is a sandstone slit recess with semicircular arched headed dressing. A small gabled dormer rises centrally from the roof between the end gables, with shaped barges and a casement window set within smooth render surrounds finished in dark grey rough cast to blend with the original basalt facade.
The east facade features a projecting central entrance porch with a gabled roof and decorative barges with finial and overhang. The porch doorway has a four-centred arch head with painted sandstone dressings and timber sheeted door. Above the doorway, rising to the gable apex, is a carved head, now painted. On the north and south facades of the porch are very narrow windows with painted sandstone dressings. The entire original building, including the porch, has a stepped chamfered plinth with stone steps to the doorway. The west facade is blank except for a central chimney breast with unpainted sandstone quoins, which rises above the eaves and tapers in stepped fashion to a tall decorative chimney pot. The rear facade displays end gables with a small upper level casement window and retains the original gabled form.
Extensive restoration work was undertaken in 1996–97. At this time, a large sympathetic extension was added to the rear, constructed in matching style with gabled returns that extend south in parallel with the original building, creating an overall roughly H-shaped plan form. This recent work successfully increases floor area without detracting from the character of the original structure. Cast iron rainwater goods and a cast iron pump located to the north-west of the building complete the external features.
The listing excludes the modern extension and applies only to the original house. The building is noted for its architectural interest in style, proportion, ornamentation, and sympathetic alterations, as well as local historical interest.
