Description
This is a single-storey, gabled house with an attic, likely of eighteenth-century origin, though it has been modernized with recent additions. It sits on a slight rise at the end of a lane, approximately one and a half miles south of Millisle, County Down.
The front, or southeast, facade features a centrally positioned, lean-to glazed porch with a glazed entrance door. To the left of the porch is a modern timber window designed to resemble a sash window, with panes arranged in a Georgian style. Two similar windows are located to the right of the porch. The northeast gable has a comparable window at attic level, with another on the southwest gable at the same height. The rear of the house now incorporates a large, flat-roofed single-storey extension on the right side, with large PVC windows and a door. A somewhat larger modern timber window, again with Georgian-style window panes, is positioned on the rear of the main house to the left of the extension, followed by a small four-pane window. The entire facade is finished with a rough cast "salt and pepper" render, with a plain rendered recessed base. The main roof is pitched and covered with Bangor blue slates, with two rendered chimney stacks at the centre and on the northeast gable. A flat-roofed dormer with multi-pane windows is located centrally on the rear roof slope. PVC rainwater goods are fitted. The area immediately surrounding the house has been concreted.
A dwelling is depicted on the Dunbar estate map of 1797, then occupied by a Samuel Back, and is also shown on both the first and revised editions of Ordnance Survey maps, suggesting an eighteenth-century origin. The porch, extension, and rear dormer are relatively recent additions, likely dating back to around 1980. The building exhibits vernacular characteristics.
