Description
37 Woburn Road is a single-storey rubble-built house dating from around 1750, situated on a hilltop at the end of a long lane north of Woburn Road, approximately two miles south of Millisle in County Down. The building has been substantially altered in recent times with the addition of dormers, Velux windows, and modern fenestration throughout.
The house features a west-facing front elevation with a left-of-centre flat-roofed porch. The porch has a sheeted timber door with a small glazed panel on its west facade and a small timber window on its south side. To the left of the porch are recently installed French doors, while to the right is a tiny fixed light timber window with a sash window positioned at the far right. Above the porch sits a large modern, almost flat-roofed dormer with modern timber windows, with a Velux window to its left.
The south gable displays a modern timber window at ground level set within a fairly recently enlarged or new opening, and a modern timber window at first floor level where the opening may also have been altered. The rear elevation contains four modern timber windows, with the first, second, and fourth set in large enlarged openings; the smaller third window occupies the position of a former doorway. A dormer window serves the upper level of the rear, smaller than its front counterpart, accompanied by two Velux windows to its right.
The north gable features a small single-storey flat-roofed extension with two modern windows and a small sash window at upper level. The facades are unrendered and whitewashed, with a pitched roof covered in asbestos slates. Two whitewashed brick chimney stacks are present, and cast iron rainwater goods serve the building. Modern flat-roofed garages stand adjacent to the north-west corner.
Documentary evidence indicates the house appears on the Dunbar estate map of 1797, when it was in the possession of William Whitley, and on Ordnance Survey maps of 1833–34 and 1858–60. The present owner suggests habitation on the site predates the 1700s. All dormers, Velux windows, the porch, and the gable extension represent recent additions, with several windows having been enlarged in recent times as well.
