Description
Carrowdore Rectory is a two storey rectory house of 1842, with basement, that was greatly enlarged and renovated around 1905. The building is situated within its own grounds just off the south-east side of Woburn Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of Carrowdore.
The rectory now possesses a complex and functional appearance with an informal 'L' shaped plan. The front (east) elevation consists of the east facade of the upright of the 'L' and the east facade of the projecting horizontal wing. In the intersection between both main wings is a single storey lean-to porch with three PVC windows on its east facade and a PVC door with fanlight and sidelights. Steps lead to the porch with wrought iron railings. To the left of the porch on the east facade of the upright are three PVC windows of varying size. On the first floor above the porch are two narrow PVC windows, with two larger PVC windows to the right of these set at a lower level. The east facade of the projecting horizontal wing has a PVC window to both ground and first floor.
The south elevation consists of the south facade of the horizontal wing with two large PVC windows to the ground floor. Between these windows is a blocked window. To the first floor is a central PVC window with two more blocked windows to either side. The windows on this facade have a formal arrangement. The centre and right of the west elevation appears to have been the original rear or even front facade, as it projects slightly from the rest of this elevation, has a formal arrangement with two PVC windows to the first floor and two to the ground floor (the right window is now blocked), and possesses a hipped roof. The far left portion of the west elevation is set back and has two irregularly placed windows to the first floor of varying size and two to the ground floor. The north-facing gable of the upright has a PVC glazed door to the right on the ground floor with a PVC window to the left. A half sunken basement with a basement door is located to the far left on the west elevation, with other basement openings now blocked.
The entire facade is finished in lined render and painted. The roof is complex and mainly hipped with an extremely large almost centrally placed rendered chimney stack and a smaller rendered stack to the gable to the north. Bangor blue slates cover the roof with PVC rainwater goods. Rubble built outbuildings are located to the north-west.
The building was designed by William Farrell and constructed in 1842 at a cost of £750, funded by Archbishop Beresford, who was also responsible for the nearby Christ Church, also designed by Farrell. The rectory probably began life as a simple two storey hipped roof residence with a formal Georgian appearance and entrance to the east, as suggested by the Ordnance Survey map of 1858-60. Around 1905 the building was extensively extended and renovated, with large sections probably added to the north and south-east. The exact manner of evolution is difficult to determine, but the work carried out around 1905 was major and probably resulted in the rectory becoming a radically different building from its original form. The current complex plan and appearance suggests the original formality largely disappeared during these alterations.
