Description
This is a simple, single-storey, gabled dwelling, likely constructed around 1904. It is situated on the north side of Woburn Road, approximately two miles south of Millisle, County Down. The building was probably originally 'L' shaped, but has been extended more recently. The south-east facing facade, now considered the 'front', features a large PVC conservatory that encompasses the original front entrance, which has been enlarged and now has 'French' doors. To the left of the conservatory is a modern timber window with 'Georgian' panes, and to the right are two similar windows. A similar window is present on the north-east gable, which connects to the north-east facade of a gabled return. A window matching those on the front is also found on the north-west gable of the return, which in turn connects to a large, modern, flat-roofed extension. The north-west facade of the extension has two PVC windows flanking a panelled and glazed rear door. A further modern timber window is located on the south-west elevation of the extension, and a timber window, like those on the front, is set within the south-west gable of the main house. The entire facade is finished with rough cast render with a recessed base. The main house and return have pitched roofs covered in Bangor blue slates, featuring two-centred brick chimney stacks. The roofs have rendered parapets and a slight overhang, with PVC rainwater goods. Although an earlier building is marked on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60 on this general site, its position does not precisely match the current house. According to the current owner, the house dates back to approximately 1904 and was originally built as a residence for an estate worker associated with the 'Woburn' estate. The return is believed to be original, while the flat-roofed extension is a more recent addition. The building exhibits vernacular characteristics.
