Forest Cottage, 21 Woburn Road, Ballyrolly, Millisle, Newtownards, Co. Down, BT22 2HY

The site represents the former location of a single-story cottage, likely built in the early nineteenth century, between 1820 and 1839. It is situated approximately one mile south of Millisle, on the north side of Woburn Road in the townland of Ballyrolly. The cottage was demolished around 1996, and a modern house now occupies the site.

The cottage originally had a slate roof with plain bargeboards and a cast-iron chimney. The walls were rendered, lined, and painted pink. It featured three horizontal sliding sash windows with astragals and a sheeted front door with a plain fanlight situated between the second and third windows. A later addition was present at the rear of the building.

A house is depicted on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1833/4, and is believed to correspond to the structure that was demolished. The property was undoubtedly part of the Woburn estate. Evidence of the house’s existence comes from a map of the estate of George Dunbar, compiled by J.A. Williamson in 1797, though a copy held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) is currently missing; a reduced reproduction appears in Susan E. Pack Beresford’s 1994 publication, “Christ Church Carrowdore.” Valuation records from the 1830s, Ordnance Survey maps from 1833/4 and 1858-60, and Griffith’s valuation from 1863, all held at PRONI, also refer to the site. The cottage exhibited vernacular architectural characteristics.
