Description

Wootton Hill Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with significant alterations made in the 19th and some in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, including quoins, and features a slate roof with coped verges and brick stacks. The building has an E-shaped frontage that is positioned at right angles to the road and follows a cross passage plan. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of bays: 1:1:1:2:1. The windows are predominantly 3-light casements, with French windows to the left of the ground floor and a 20th-century casement to the right. There are two 3-light moulded stone-mullioned windows on the ground floor, and the outer bays are in projecting wings with front-facing gables. The third bay from the left features a projecting stair-turret with a front-facing gable, a cruciform finial, and a large freestone tablet with an eagle in relief. There is also a small leaded casement in a chamfered and dressed stone surround. The door opening to the fourth bay from the left has a chamfered dressed stone surround with a 4-centred head and a studded plank door. Inside, the farmhouse has a moulded cross-beamed ceiling, some deeply chamfered ceiling beams, a fireplace with a broad wooden bressumer and dressed jambs, and a large 18th-century fitted cupboard with two tiers of doors.
