Description

Wootton House is a country house located in Butleigh, built for the Hood family in the mid to late 18th century and later remodeled in the mid to late 19th century. The structure is made of coursed and squared rubble with freestone dressings, featuring a moulded cornice, a parapet with coping, coped verges, and a slate roof with ashlar and brick stacks.

The house has a symmetrical frontage with two storeys and a layout of 1:5:1 bays. The outer bays are slightly set back and lower, topped with hipped roofs. The central five bays showcase 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, highlighted by keystones, while the ground floor features taller sash windows without glazing bars, which are nearly flush mounted. The wings have 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, and there is a large 12-pane sash window to the right on the ground floor, along with French windows to the left.

The central entrance has a six-panelled door, with the top two panels glazed and an emphasized triple keystone above it. A cast-iron verandah supported by ornamental "trellis" supports spans the ground floor. To the left is a single-storey service wing with an attic, while to the right is a two-storey service wing that is set back and features an arcaded wooden bellcote on the roof, topped with a domed lead capping and cresting.

Inside, the house predominantly showcases mid to late 19th-century features, although some 18th-century elements remain. All principal ground floor rooms have impressive fireplaces, and the room to the left of the hall includes wainscot panelling and some ornamental cupboards with glazed doors. Wootton House was the home of Viscount Samuel Hood, who lived from 1724 to 1816.
