Description

The Railway Inn and its attached outbuildings, located on Coat Road, date from around 1850. The inn features a front made of ham stone ashlar, with red brick in Flemish bond on the sides and rear, and a Welsh slate roof. The taller central section has a hipped roof, while the sides are between stepped coped gables, with brick chimney stacks. The building is two to three storeys high and has a three-bay front elevation. It includes a plinth and a band course, with the outer bays being two-storey. The upper floors have 16-pane sash windows, while the lower bays contain two 8-pane sashes, although the glazing bars have been removed from the lower bay one. Each gable has wheel vents topped with ornamental finials. The second bay features a 12-pane sash window on the ground floor, positioned off-center, alongside a semi-circular arched doorway with a plain surround to the right, which has three 3-panel doors beneath a plain fanlight. The first floor has margined casement windows and a 16-pane sash window on the second floor. The east elevation has three bays with 12-pane sash windows, and there is a hipped roof square bay with a porch and door in bay two. The interior has not been seen. Attached to the rear is a stable block in an L-plan, covered by a triple roll clay tile roof with a stepped coped north gable featuring a finial. It has small pane casement windows and a 3-centre archway on the west side, and this structure may be older than the inn itself. The overall design was striking, intended to make an impression across the railway yard and station, which have since been removed; the railway arrived in 1849.
