Description
The rear wing of No. 61 High Street, associated with the Duke of Monmouth Public House, dates from the mid-18th century and is built on earlier foundations. It is constructed from red Wembdon rubblestone and Flemish-bond brick, with stone cills and a flat felted roof. The building has two storeys and features a two-window range. At ground level, there are two courses of brick headers beneath a blank rubblestone wall. The first floor includes flat gauged brick arches above 20th-century windows, with blocks below the cills that were likely once brackets. On the ground floor to the right, there is a wide gauged brick segmental arch that has been bricked up, with a 6/6-pane sash window from the 18th century inserted, also featuring blocks below the cills. To the right, a 19th-century block at the corner of Lamb Lane has a blocked doorway, which is topped by a semicircular rusticated arch with moulded imposts and a lintel. In the tympanum of this arch, there is a painted carved stone cartouche frame surrounding a convex oval panel that displays the words "Masonic Hall" in raised letters.
