Description
This mid-19th century shop is located on the High Street in Bridgwater and is known as the Round House. It was formerly The Queen public house. The building is constructed of painted brick with painted stone stepped voussoirs, cills, and a platband; it has a curved hipped slate roof, continuous with the adjacent building at No. 71, and a brick stack to the ridge. The building follows a double-depth plan and features a rounded end on the corner of the street. It is three storeys high and has a six-window range. The wide eaves are supported by paired brackets. The upper floors have 3/6-pane sash windows to the second floor and 6/6-pane sashes to the first floor. A keyed semicircular arch features above the door of No. 73. The ground floor to the right has a 20th-century glazed door with an ornamental semicircular fanlight and arch. To the right, on St Mary Street, there is a late 20th-century three-panel door with an overlight, stepped voussoirs, and a late 19th-century 2/2-pane sash window above it. Other windows face the High Street, including a range on the curve. The curved portion of the ground floor is glazed with small panes and has pilasters to the sides, flanking a door to the left and a former door in the centre of the curve. The interior of the curved shop is supported by cast-iron columns with Egyptian lotus capitals.
