Description
The Valiant Soldier Public House is a public house dating from the late 16th century, which was remodeled and extended at the rear in the early 19th century. It features painted roughcast walls, with stone coping on the parapet, cornice, cills, and dripmould. The roof is made of pantiles and has brick stacks located at the right gable end and left of centre. The building has a three-unit plan, with a rear right wing creating an L-shape. It is two storeys high and has a four-window range. The windows are 8/8-pane sashes with flat arches, except for the two flanking the right-of-centre door, which are 6/6-pane tripartite sashes; the ground-floor right window is set under a 19th-century label mould. The door is framed by a 20th-century pointed-arched stone architrave, with a small datestone above it reading '1563'. The rear wing contains 19th-century 6/6-pane sashes. Inside, the ground floor features two stop-chamfered beams, and in the rear right corner, there is a massive stone lintel with a recessed Tudor arch over moulded stopped jambs, leading to an open fire. The room above has a similar, but smaller fireplace located above and to the left of it.
