Description
This is a house consisting of several wings constructed over several periods. A mid-18th century wing fronts onto Main Street, with a top storey added and window openings altered in the 19th century. A rear wing incorporates elements from the 17th century with a 19th-century extension. Repair work was undertaken in 1986.
The mid-18th century wing is built of red brick with irregular vitreous headers to the lower storeys. It has a rubble stone plinth, 19th-century eaves, a roof of Swithland slate, and brick chimneys. The front has two storeys and three bays. The right bay features three-light horizontal sash windows. The left bays have similar two-light windows to the top storey, with blocked windows below. All front windows have segmental arches of header brick over brick tympana. The left end of the wing has two bays with late 19th- to early 20th-century sash windows to the ground and first floors, and a paired barred wooden casement to the second floor, all with 19th-century painted brick surrounds. The north side has one bay with two-light horizontal sashes and a fine, heavy two-panelled door with iron studs bearing the date CTM 1753 outlined in smaller studs.
The rear wing comprises a timber-framed section with herringbone brick infill and a stone plinth alongside the front wing, and a brick bay to its left. It has a plain tile roof and a central brick chimney. This wing also has two storeys. The 17th-century bay has a 20th-century sash window in what was formerly a doorway, a two-light horizontal sash above, and remnants of a blocked original two-light window. The 19th-century bay has 20th-century casements and an old board door.
During the 1986 repairs, lead rainwater heads were stored inside the house, one dated CTM 1755. A circular lead cistern dated CTM 1755 and JW 1707 was missing in 1986. Inside the right bay of the 18th-century wing is an ovolo-moulded spine beam and a segmental-headed brick fireplace.
