Description

The Keeper’s Lodge is a house dating to around 1600. It’s built with a timber frame covered in whitewashed render, with particularly fine close studding on the front and side elevations. The studs on the gable ends and the left side are arranged diagonally, with upright baluster studs between the first and second-floor windows. The rear of the house has simpler rectangular panels. A granite rubble plinth sits beneath a Swithland slate roof, and brick chimneys feature pairs of 19th-century square shafts. The house is arranged in a ‘T’ shape, with a cross passage at the junction of the two wings. It has two storeys and an attic. The front has two bays, with a central passage bay; the left bay is gabled and projects forward. The gables have carved bargeboards decorated with a vine trail pattern and wooden finials. Restored oriel windows are supported by shaped wooden brackets, with diagonal leaded glazing and hipped Swithland slate roofs. The gabled bay has a three-light transomed window on both the ground and first floors, and a two-light window in the attic. The right bay has a three-light ground-floor window and a two-light upper window, both transomed. A similar two-light window is above the front door, which leads to the cross passage. The front door is 20th-century and features studs and a renewed four-centred wooden arch with carved spandrels. Inside, original floor beams remain; the front left bay has an ovolo-moulded cross beam, while the right bay has broach stops to the chamfered spine beam. The fireplaces have been altered.
