Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century house, now a shop, located in East Street, Ilminster. The building is constructed of painted Flemish-bond brick with a Ham Hill stone cornice, parapet, and stepped stone copings to the gable ends, which incorporates a brick stack on the left side. The rear has a pantile roof. It follows a double-depth plan and has two storeys and a two-window front. The first floor has 8/8-pane sash windows with flat, gauged arches above. The ground floor features a late 19th century shop window with three panes on the right side and a canted bay of single-pane sash windows on the left, both projecting to street level. The main entrance door to the right-of-centre has an overlight and two vertical glazed panels forming a Tudor-style arch at the top, with a single panel below. Panelled pilasters with consoles support a projecting fascia to either side of the door. To the far left, within the façade of the adjoining building at No.26, is a wide four-panel door with a painted-over overlight, leading onto a passage containing a door to an upper flat. The left return side shows rubblestone construction to an earlier roof pitch, which has been raised with brick to create the present angle. The interior of the building was not inspected.
