Description

This is a bank, built around 1860. It is constructed of Ham Hill stone ashlar, with coursed rubble returns, a slate roof, and ashlar stacks to the gable ends and centre. The building follows a double-depth plan, featuring three storeys and a six-window frontage. The ground floor has six-panel doors, each with a semicircular fanlight, set back within doorcases that have plain pilasters with foliate capitals supporting arches with simple moulding. A frieze of alternating roundels and vertically-reeded panels sits above the doors. The two central bays project slightly on all floors, featuring a semicircular pediment with a roundel depicting a horse on a shield. A moulded cornice supports the windows in this central section. Windows have beaded reveals, with 1/1-pane sashes on the ground floor, 2/2-pane sashes on the first floor, and 2/2-pane sashes on the second. These windows are set within recessed semicircular-arched surrounds, with aprons of polychromatic tiles, resting on a string course. A string course at impost level, and a thin moulding following the shape of the arches (without keystones to the four outer windows), complete the external detailing. The interior remains uninspected.
