Description
The Market House in Ilminster is a market house that was rebuilt around 1813. It is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar, featuring Ham Hill stone slates on the lower two courses of its hipped roof, with diminishing courses of slate, likely from Delabole, leading up to the ridge. The roof has rolled lead ridges. The building has a square plan and is a single storey high, with three open bays on each side. The centre of the roof is supported by a Tuscan-style pillar that has a circular stone seat around its base. The bays are defined by engaged Tuscan-style columns. Each bay features a depressed arch with a keystone, which rests on square Tuscan-style engaged piers. The capitals of these piers form imposts, while their bases sit on a low wall between the main columns. The central bays on the east and west sides serve as open entrances.
