Description
No. 2 North Street, which includes No. 1 East Street, is a pair of shops and a house built in the early to mid 19th century. The building is made of Ham Hill stone ashlar with stone coping, featuring a brick stack on the left gable end and a ridge stack to the right of the center. It has a tarred slate roof and a double-depth plan. The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a seven-window range.
All first-floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes, with three on East Street and four on North Street, surrounding a curved corner bay that shows signs of a former window. There are four 20th-century dormers: one on East Street, one above the corner, and two on North Street. The building has platbands at both the eaves and sill levels. A continuous moulded cornice runs along the shop fascias from the far right to the center of the left facade.
The shop on the right features a plate-glass window with four panes, wooden mullions, and a transom, along with steps leading up to a six-panel door topped by a tall margin-paned overlight. The corner shop has similar windows, with five panes to the right and four to the left, flanking a 20th-century door and a tall plain overlight. To the left of this shop, under the fascia, is another six-panel door with a tall overlight, and adjacent to it are two late 19th-century horned 1/1-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
