Description

Virgins is a house that may date back to the late medieval period, with a ceiling from the 16th century, walls raised in the early 17th century, and extensive reconstructions in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building is constructed from squared and coursed limestone and has a concrete tile roof with box eaves. There are brick stacks at the gable ends, with the right stack set in from the rebuilt gable end, which may have originally been external. The layout consists of two cells and a cross passage. The house is two storeys high and has two bays, featuring concrete lintels above the window openings. A 20th-century dormer is located to the left of the centre, and the first floor has two-light casements, while the ground floor has 16-pane sash windows flanking a central gabled porch. Although the interior was not seen, it is reported to contain a smoke-blackened roof truss and principal rafter that indicate it was originally an open hall house, with walls later raised. There is also a 9-panel compartment ceiling with deep chamfers and no stops to the right of a blocked through passage, along with the remains of a stone spiral stair beside a blocked fireplace.
