Description
These are a pair of limekilns dated 1906, built for G Small and Son. They are made of blue lias stone, squared and coursed, and are set into a hillside with a small square vent located just above ground level. The kilns feature semi-circular openings supported by piers, a barrel vault, and voussoirs forming a depressed segmental arch. There is a depressed four-centred arch opening leading to the stoke hole, and both bays have doorless metal safes built into the left-hand wall. The circular flues on the left are open, while the right one is blocked. Above the right-hand kiln, there is a square tablet inscribed with "G S 1906." Each kiln has a corrugated iron pentice porch. At the time of the survey in December 1984, the facade was largely obscured by ivy but was generally in good condition. A platform about 500 mm high in front of the kilns was used for loading. The field behind the kilns was previously a lime quarry, now filled in. The kiln master's house is located to the north, but it is not included in this listing. The kilns ceased production around 1939 and are among the last limekilns built, being the only known dated example in the county.
