Description
The road bridge over the railway, built around 1866, is constructed from snecked, squared, irregularly coursed local sandstone. It features rusticated voussoirs and chamfered sandstone coping. The bridge has a single span segmental arch, which is set at a dramatic raking angle because the west bank is significantly lower than the east bank. The coping at the western end was slightly damaged and overgrown with ivy during a survey in December 1984, but the bridge is otherwise in good condition. It spans the now dismantled Taunton to Chard branch line, which was opened in 1866 and closed in 1962. This bridge is a striking feature in the landscape and holds historical significance as the best surviving bridge on the Taunton-Chard line.
